The Province of Ragusa is the youngest and smallest provinces of the Sicilian Region and occupies the south-eastern are of Sicily. It covers over an area of 1600 square kilometers with a population of about 300.000 people. It is bordered by the provinces of Siracusa, Catania and Caltanissetta.

Characterized mainly by agricultural economy, it has invested in the development of commercial and construction companies which together the agricultural sector absorbs most of the local businesses. According to the Regional Law 17 of 1989 August 12th, it is composed by the aggregation in consortium of 12 municipalities: Ragusa, Acate, Chiaramonte Gulfi, Comiso, Giarratana, Modica, Monterosso Almo, Pozzallo, Santa Croce Camerina, Scicli , Vittoria.

Since its establishment in 1927 during the Fascist regime, the province of Ragusa is a public local authority administrating the economic, social and cultural development of its community. It represents the political and social demands of the population and promotes the participation of the municipalities and other social formations in the process of democratic development. The province of Ragusa recognizes among the fundamental principles of its Statute the protection and enhancement of the natural, historical, archaeological, artistic heritage, landscape and environment, with priority to the protection of “territorial integrity, free from plants injurious to health”. As mentioned in Article 18 of the Statute, the province of Ragusa is committed to the protection and enhancement of its natural heritage, the management of natural reserves, the protection of the environment and the prevention of environmental pollution in general. To this end it promotes initiatives to safeguard and defend its territory.
